For an elephant that can fly,Dumbosure is having a hard time getting off the ground.Tim Burton’s live-action reboot—or “reimagining” if you’re nasty—officially nabbed $45 million in its debut weekend, flying below the $50 million mark that early predictions pointed to.
This isn’t anywhere close to a home run,especiallyfor a Disney project.Dumbonow sits toward the bottom of the Disney live-action bracket, beating out the openings ofPete’s Dragon($21.5 million) and Alice Through the Looking Glass ($26 million), but well below the loftier numbers of entries likeThe Jungle Book($103 million),Alice In Wonderland($116 million), andBeauty and the Beast($174 million). Similar to…pretty much every non-Marvel blockbuster made these days,Dumbowill look to the international box office to recoup its $170 million budget; after this weekend, the film’s worldwide total is $116 million, $71 million coming from overseas.
Meanwhile,Uscontinued its strong march into horror history.Jordan Peele’s sophomore feature garnered another $33 million, down 52% from its premiere weekend, bringing its domestic total to $128 million on a $20 million budget.Captain Marvel, too, remains rock solid in its fourth week. TheBrie Larson-led MCU entry ended the weekend with another $20.5 million, its domestic total soaring to $353 million. Worldwide,Captain Marvelis banging on the billion dollar door, sitting right now at $990 million.
The biggest disappointment of the weekend goes to The Beach Bum, the stoner comedy from the mind ofHarmony Korine(Spring Breakers) and starringMatthew McConaughey. The film nabbed just $1.8 million despite the presence of not only its leading man but alsoZac Efron,Isla Fisher,Snoop Dogg, andJonah Hill. That opening weekend take is the lowest in McConaughey’s career for a movie playing on 1,000 screens.
