Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoningis already proving to be one of the hits of the summer, with the 2025 box office finally firing into gear thanks toTom Cruise’s final stint as Ethan Hunt, as well as Warner Bros.’Final Destination Bloodlines, Disney’sLilo & Stitchremake and, before that,Ryan Coogler’s surprise success,Sinners. As the last movie in one of the action genre’s best franchises, the world is feeling nostalgic for what has come before it, especially withChristopher McQuarrieand co. using many moments inThe Final Reckoningto reflect on the franchise’s roots.

Because of this nostalgia building within this multi-generational fanbase, eyes are quickly turning to previous installments in the franchise, from 2023’sMission: Impossible - Dead ReckoningtoMission: Impossible - Fallout. However, there’s no better place to find the perfect nostalgia-blended hit of adrenaline than Ethan Hunt’s very first (not-so) impossible mission way back in 1996. Prime Video viewers clearly concur with that suggestion, with the movie that started it allofficially entering the streamer’stop 10 most-watched films in the U.S. as of July 19, 2025.

Was ‘Mission: Impossible’ an Instant Hit?

It’s hard to imagine in 2025 that aMission: Impossiblemovie could be anything other than a success. In total, the franchise has earned a whopping$4.3 billion worldwide, with over 25% coming from the U.S. alone. However, surprisingly, the first installment in the franchise is actually the second worst-performing at the global box office, albeit without being adjusted for inflation. Only making $457 million worldwide,Mission: Impossiblealso had the smallest budget of the lot at $80 million, and, given the franchise was unknown at the time, this still marks a huge success for directorBrian De Palmaand Paramount Pictures.
