It’s been well over a month sinceRyan Coogler’s original vampire horror film hit theaters, but it will go down as one of the year’s most memorable movies. Not only hasSinnersfound tremendous success at the box office — it’s earned over $250 million domestically and nearly$350 million globally— but it’s also been extremely well-received by both critics and audiences. On the world’s leading aggregate site,Rotten Tomatoes,Sinnersearned a 97% from critics and a 96% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

It didn’t take fans long to begin speculating about what the next chapter inSinners’ story could look like. Ideas were floated out for a prequel film following Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) and their work in Chicago, or even a prequel following Remmick’s (Jack O’Connell) rise to unchallenged vampiric power. There were also talks of a sequel, but this would seemingly only feature Sammie (Miles Caton), as he’s the only one to survive the onslaught.Sinnersdirector Ryan Coogler is aware of the online chatter, and during a recent interview with Ebony Magazine, he weighed in on the chances ofSinnersgetting either a prequel or sequel film:

“I’ve been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, soI wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique. I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrées, and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”

It’s hard to fault Coogler, who hasn’t directed a non-MCUfilm since 2015, for wanting to stick and move and not keep himself attached to the same property as he’s done the last few years withBlack Panther. It’s also difficult to get excited about anything from the world of Sinners that doesn’t come from Ryan Coogler — the film has his unique stamp and identity all over it — so it might be for the best thatSinnersexists on its own, and not as part of a larger franchise.
