Thefirst trailerfor Paramount’s sequelStar Trek Beyondarrived online earlier today, and it’s certainly something.Justin Lin, who helmedFast & Furious: Tokyo DriftthroughFast & Furious 6, takes over directing duties fromJ.J. Abrams, and while Abrams remains involved as a producer on the picture, it looks very much like Paramount and Lin are amping things up to the next level in terms of action and destruction, with some solid humorous beats courtesy ofSimon PeggandDoug Jung’s script to boot.

The story appears to revolve around the Enterprise crew crash landing during their extended mission, encountering one or two new alien races in the process that cause more than a few hiccups.Sofia Boutella(Kingsman: The Secret Service) appears to be a friend, whileIdris Elbais foe. What’s curious about this trailer is that while it reveals the new players, they are heavily disguised in alien makeup. In fact, I didn’t even know that reptile-looking thingy was Elba until it was pointed out to me by someone else. I’ll be interested to see how much of Elba comes through in the performance, or if we can even really tell it’s him under all that makeup. One imagines this will be a very physically demanding role as he’s basically in cognito.

Elsewhere we see the Enterprise crew banding together to survive, while some are worse for wear—what happens to Spock (Zachary Quinto), I wonder? And what are Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Sulu (John Cho) so upset about? We’ll find out whenStar Trek Beyondhits theaters next summer.

For now, peruse this collection of screengrabs from the new trailer and sound off if you spot anything else curious or noteworthy. The film also starsChris Pine,KarlUrban,Anton Yelchin, andJoe Taslim.Star Trek Beyondopens on July 28, 2025 in IMAX and traditional theaters.
