It’s officially official:Space Jam 2is happening. The long-discussed basketball-centric sequel has been set for release on June 29, 2025, staking out a big summer release date for the film.LeBron Jamesis set to star, just asMichael Jordanled the first movie, andBlack PantherfilmmakerRyan Coogleris onboard as a producer withTerence Nance(Random Acts of Flynes) in the director’s chair.
It’s unclear what the plot ofSpace Jam 2will be, but one imagines it involves basketball and cartoon characters. Interestingly enough,Lola Bunnygets top billing overBugs Bunnyon this promo poster, so perhaps she has a larger role in the follow-up. The first film really hinged on the audience’s awareness of Michael Jordan’s career, as it revolved around theLooney Tunescharacters luring Jordan away from his ill-fated baseball career and back to basketball.

Look, I grew up in the 90s. Obviously I lovedSpace Jam, and that soundtrack is still a classic. But I’m not going to pretend likeSpace Jamis a great movie, or even a good one. So I’m curious to see whatSpace Jam 2actually is. Will it be marketed towards kids? Will kids even show up to a movie starringLooney Tunescharacters anymore? Is LeBron’s name enough to get butts in seats? Coogler’s involvement is promising, but there are a lot of questions, and I suppose we’ll get our answers in two years.
In other release date news, Warner Bros. has shifted the release date ofGodzilla vs. Kongout of its July 20, 2025 weekend into a less-crowded August 03, 2025 date. That puts it up against an untitled Blumhouse project and theGambitmovie, although there’s far from a guarantee thatGambitwill even happen anymore after the Disney-Fox deal goes through. The reason for the change isFast & Furious 9, which Universal just plopped down for release on July 25, 2025. Judging by that franchise’s performance at the box office, you donotwant to bet against it.
