Sherlock Holmes 3, the third entry in the feature film franchise that starsRobert Downey Jr.in the title role, is getting serious about its script. Back in April, screenwriterJames Coynewas tasked with creating an action-packed mystery that would then be solved by Holmes and his pal Dr. John Watson (Jude Law), but it seems that it’ll take more than one mind to craft such a case.
Varietyreports that Warner Bros. and Downey Jr.’s production team have set quite the writers room to sort things out. HelpingHolmeswith this mystery will be the screenwriting team ofNicole Perlman(Guardians of the Galaxy),Justin Malen(Baywatch),Gary Whitta(Rogue One: A Star Wars Story),Geneva Dworet-Robertson(Tomb Raider) andKieran Fitzgerald(Snowden).
The first two films in the franchise totaled $525 million and $545 million worldwide respectively, so even though Downey Jr. is set to start production on the next Marvel Studios' outingAvengers: Infinity Warthis February, he’s keen to get things moving on his other major movie series.Guy Ritchieis expected to return to the director’s chair;Susan Downey,Dan Lin,Joel SilverandLionel Wigramare attached to produce.
Setting up a writers room in this fashion is a fairly common occurrence for TV shows, where multiple writers tackle numerous episodes over the course of a season, and more recently for movie franchises, like Paramount’s collaboration with Hasbro. A one-film writers room is a bit of an oddity. The aim is keep any rewrites in-house rather than going out in search of another screenwriter in the future. There’s also the possibility that having a writers room for the third film might spark up ideas for another film in the franchise, but there are no reports to that effect at the moment.
