At Comic-Con this past July, folks were raving abouta video that was shownduring the Marvel panel that “revealed” whatChris Hemsworth’s Thor was up to during the events ofCaptain America: Civil War. The video was directed byThor: RagnarokhelmerTaika Waititiand was reportedlyveryfunny, and now you can be the judge yourself, as Marvel has released the video online in its entirety. “Team Thor” is available as a bonus feature on the upcomingCaptain America: Civil WarBlu-ray, and those Comic-Con folks weren’t kidding—it’s funny!
The video is a short mockumentary shot in the style ofThe Officeor Waititi’s fantastic vampire comedyWhat We Do in the Shadows, as it shows Thor simply hanging around in Australia, feeling sad that no one has called him to come and join theCivil Warfight. There are a number of really funny touches here and there that I wouldn’t dare spoil, but Hemsworth has certainly shown his comedy chops previously inVacationand this summer’sGhostbusters, and it definitely seems like he and Waititi are a swell fit.
I am mighty curious to see what toneThor: Ragnaroksettles on. Waititi is best known as a director of comedies, but his 2016 adventure picHunt for the Wilderpeopleis much wider in scope with some great moments of drama scattered throughout, and it definitely maintains the precise timing of Waititi’s other features.Ragnarokhas to deal with matters of great importance, sure, but if you look at that cast—Hemsworth,Tom Hiddleston,Mark Ruffalo—there are some really great comedic performers there, so here’s hoping Waititi captures that at least somewhat onscreen.
