[Mild spoilers forSausage Partyfollow.]
Now that we know how the sausage is made, so to speak,Seth Rogenis game to expand the world ofSausage Party. The actor, who voiced Frank in the animated raunch-fest and originated the story, teased his hopes for making a sequel, as well as launching into a string of R-rated animated films.
During an interview withFandango, Rogen discussed a potential concept forSausage Party 2that begins with the original ending that didn’t make the theatrical cut. A version of the film screened at SXSW saw the food items step through a portal to meet their live-action counterparts, played by the voice actors themselves.
Rogen explained:
“It’s something we talk about, yeah. That’s one of the reasons why we took away the [original] ending because we thought, well, if that was the first scene of the next movie it’s probably not what you would want it to be, with them just seeing us and finding us basically. But the idea of a live-action/animated movie, like aWho Framed Roger Rabbit?-style hybrid is also very exciting, mostly becauseWho Framed Roger Rabbit?is one of my favorite movies of all time.”
Regarding non-Sausage-Party-related fair he has kicking around upstairs, Rogen said:
“We have ideas for other R-rated animated movies that have nothing to do withSausage Party, and we’re hoping this goes well so we get to make them. And hopefully it won’t take this long to make the next one because it won’t take five years to convince someone to make it. The whole problem before was there was no precedent for it, so hopefully [Sausage Party] will show people that this is a viable thing to do…or it’ll do the opposite and this will be the last R-rated animated movie that ever gets made!”
Sausage Partyfeatures a voice cast that includesKristen Wiig,Jonah Hill,James Franco,Paul Rudd, andMichael Ceraas grocery stores items who discover the horrific reality of what humans do with food upon bringing them home. The film is playing now in theaters.
As Rogen said, his future plans are predicated onSausage Party’s box-office performance. So far,it’s kicking ass, but we’ll see how it all pans out in the weeks ahead.
