Youhas come to a close after 5 seasons. The serial killer drama starredPenn Badgleyas Joe Goldberg, a book-obsessed stalker who masquerades his murderous tendencies as “care” for the women he becomes obsessed with. In Season 5, Joe sets his sights on Brontë, played byMadeline Brewer. Brewer ended up beingthe “final girl” of Joe Goldberg’s horror storyand had a big final battle between her character and Badgley’s killer. Which she toldPEOPLEall about in an interview!
Brewer was talking to the publication at the launch of their new PEOPLE app when she said how the final moments ofYouwere intense but exciting. In the end, it is revealed that Brontë is actually Louise Flannery, a formerstudent of Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), who was Joe’sobsession in Season 1and the first love interest the character kills. Brontë, who is tricked into loving Joe, comes to her senses and tries to kill him herself butthe final showdown between Joe and Brontë ends with the police finally taking down Joe Goldberg.

“It was a huge moment and it was really exciting to help land the plane of these five seasons of a show,” Brewer told PEOPLE about the fight scene. “It was intense, but it was really choreographed. It was every moment, down to where little scrapes and things were on us were super choreographed. Butreally traumatizing in a lot of ways. I talked about this on Penn [Badgley]‘sPodcrushedPodcast. Yeah, it was really intense. It was great though.”
A Fitting End for Joe Goldberg
The battle between Joe and Brontë was part of Joe’s last-ditch attempt at surviving. After Season 1, Joe went to California where he met Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti). The two fell in love, murdered people together, andwhen Love tried to kill Joe, he beat her to it and framed her for his own death as well as hers. Then, Joe went to England where he pretended to be a professor named Jonathan before returning to New York for Season 5 with his new wife, Kate (Charlotte Richie). But Joe still fell into his old ways. Brontë came into his life, loving books, andhe saw someone to protect.
Season 5 used Joe’s ability to get women to fall in love with him as well as his past vicitms, likeTati Gabrielle’s Marienne, to help finally bring Joe Goldberg to justice. Brontë doesn’t kill him, butshe does humiliatingly harm him, and it lands Joe behind bars. But that final fight sequence is impactful and that’s all thanks to Brewer and Badgley.

You can see Brewer as Brontë in Season 5 ofYouon Netflix.
A dangerously charming, intensely obsessive young man goes to extreme measures to insert himself into the lives of those he is transfixed by.
