The millennial urge to revisit one’s youth is being satisfied in recent months, with a string of theatrical re-releases designed to facilitate just that. This weekend,Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sithdelivered a haul so massive that it could put new releases to shame. In fact, the film’s 20th anniversary re-release outperformedBen Affleck’sThe Accountant 2, which made $38 million worldwide as compared toRevenge of the Sith’s $42 million haul. But a week before that, Focus Features re-releasedPride & Prejudicein celebration of its 20th anniversary, generating about as much as the movie did in its original opening weekend back in 2005.
After 10 days in theaters,Pride & Prejudicehas grossed over $5 million at the domestic box office, taking its domestic haul past the $40 million mark, and itsglobal haul past the $130 million milestone. Directed byJoe Wright,the movie made stars ofKeira KnightleyandMatthew Macfadyen, who played Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, respectively. Itreceived critical acclaim upon release, and has only grown in prominence in the years since.Pride & Prejudiceholds an 87%Rotten Tomatoesscore, and an even better 89% audience score on the aggregator website, based on more than 250,000 ratings.

Pride & Prejudicealso served as an early vehicle forRosamund Pikeand a youngCarey Mulligan. Based on the book byJane Austen, the movie was produced ona reported budget of under $30 million, and was acclaimed for its central performances and Wright’s fresh take on the classic material.Pride & Prejudicegenerated a little over $600,000 this weekend at the domestic box office, dropping out of the top 10 thanks to a host of new releases. It is, however, still playing in over 600 locations nationwide.
What Have Knightley, Macfadyen, and Wright Been Up To?
Knightley was nominated for an Academy Awardfor her performance in the film; she went on, of course, to star in three Pirates of the Caribbean movies. More recently, she headlined her first Netflix series, the well-likedBlack Doves. Macfadyen, on the other hand, has cultivated a niche for himself as a villain. He gained an entirely new fan-base thanks to his leading role in HBO’sSuccession, and more recently, he played a scheming middle-manager in Marvel’sDeadpool & Wolverine. Wright’s last feature film was the musical dramaCyrano, but he has been busy helming episodes of the television seriesThe Agency, andMussolini: Son of the Century.
