Walt Disney has released the first trailer forPirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment in thePirates of the Caribbeanfranchise. The movie featuresJohnny Deppreturning to his role of Jack Sparrow, the eternally drunk pirate and intrepid explorer, as well asOrlando Bloomback as Will Turner, the young adventurer that Sparrow took under wing in the first movie.
Visually, the footage looks fantastic, these films certainly haven’t lost their sense of scope and it has a surprisingly eerie tone that belies the swashbuckling slapstick at the heart of the former entries. This time around we’ve gotJavier Bardemas one of Sparrow’s ghostly former cohorts, Captain Salazar, and as a master of the art of scenery chewing villainy, he appears to be on top kooky form. It’s been a long time since I greeted a Pirates of the Carribean with feverish anticipation, but with a pair of exciting new directors and this promising first footage, I’m on board to see where this one goes.
The latestPirates of the Caribbeanmovie is directed byJoachim RønningandEspen Sandberg, the duo behind the foreign adventure filmKon-Tiki. The screenplay is courtesy ofJeff Nathanson, who penned movies ranging fromTower HeistandIndiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal SkulltoThe TerminalandRush Hour 3. Depp and Bloom star alongside a cast that includesKaya Scodelario, David Wenham, Geoffrey Rush, Brenton Thwaites, and, continuing the rockstar tradition started withKeith Richards,Paul McCartney.
