DogmadirectorKevin Smithhas some kind words about the upcomingSupermanmovie. The first DCU feature underJames GunnandPeter Safran’s lead will be entering theaters in just a few weeks, and the filmmaker praised the trailer for sticking to its comic book roots, giving his thoughts on why this upcoming superhero flick is sure to succeed.

In a recent interview with Deadline,Smith stated that the trailer feels reminiscent of comic book storiesand that Gunn has made plenty of smart choices for what he presents on screen. Although Smith was skeptical thatKrypto the Superdogmight get harmed somehow, he liked the film’s charm based on the trailer alone.

“It feels more comic book-y is what it is. I mean, number one, putting his trunks on the outside again is just charming, and including the dog is not something we’ve seen over the course of the last 10 years, and I think that’s such a smart choice, man. Unless they hurt that f—ing dog, which, then can also be a strong choice, dramatically speaking. Butit just looks so charming.”

Additionally, the filmmaker believes that people want to see aSupermanmovie based on the current state the world is in. He brought up the theory that if a country like the U.S. was prospering, thenBatmanmovies would succeed, since they are “a dark fantasy about everything going wrong.” Meanwhile, as theU.S. has a lot going on in politicsand a cost-of-living crisis, people want to see a story of hope. Hence, Superman is the best superhero to save the day, on and off screen.

“And there’s this theory that I didn’t come up with, it’s been around forever, where whether Batman or Superman is ascendant and dominant in the culture has everything to do with where we are as a country. So, when times are good for Americans and prosperous, oddly enough, Batman is the dominant character because Batman is a dark fantasy about everything going wrong. … And then the flip theory of that isSuperman is ascendant whenever the country is doing poorly or it needs help, and that’s when that character plays strongest. So, it would feel like based on that, like Superman, the stage is set for that movie to make so much f—ing money.People wanna hope right now. People just want to believe in a f—ing thing, man.”

Supermanis the first feature film in DCU’sChapter One: Gods and Monsters, directed and written by Gunn. It starsDavid Corenswet,Rachel Brosnahan, andNicholas Houltas Clark Ken/Superman, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor, respectively. Meanwhile, other DC characters are also set to make an appearance. According to Gunn, this movieisn’t an origin story for the Man of Steeland will let the audience see another side of Superman that’s rarely showcased.
