Materialistsmight just be the most stylish breakup movie of the summer — and critics are loving it. The new film fromPast Liveswriter-directorCeline Songhasdebuted with an impressive 86% on Rotten Tomatoes(from 28 reviews and counting), a sign that Song’s pivot to romantic dramedy is already striking a chord with audiences. And let’s be real, how could it not? And how could it not?MaterialistsstarsDakota Johnsonas Lucy, a high-powered New York matchmaker who gets tangled in a love triangle withher charming ex (Chris Evans) and a wealthy new client (Pedro Pascal). If that pitch doesn’t scream “chaotic good summer romance,” nothing does.

Set in a modern day NYC but soaked in the glossy throwback vibes of ‘90s rom-coms,Materialistsis being described as a blend ofHitchandJames L. Brooks, a frothy combo that aims for laughs and lands with surprising melancholy. According to early reviews, Song keeps the emotional honesty that definedPast Lives, but allows herself to lean into comedy and charm — and let her stars be, well, stars. And with charisma and charm like the leading trio, you’d be foolish not to just let them be what they are — movie stars.

Is ‘Materialists’ Worth Seeing?

From the reviews, it definitely seems worth your time. There’s no weak link in this triangle. Johnson is at her best here, giving Lucy the brittle shell and buried heart that make the character sing. Pascal, internet zaddy and now cinematic unicorn, is perfectly cast as Harry — rich, decent, emotionally available, and bafflingly good at being supportive. And Evans is back in romance mode and it’s glorious. His performance as John is scruffy, sad, and unpolished — and it absolutely works. The former Captain America hasn’t done a role this emotionally open in a while, and Song’s script gives him room to be bruised and hopeful all at once. So is it worth seeing?

If 86% on Rotten Tomatoes is anything to go by — yes. It’s a fresh, funny, and quietly poignant return to form for the romantic comedy, with Song bringing the same emotional intelligence she’s known for, just in a shinier, flirtier package. Whether you’re team Chris or team Pedro, there’s something deeply satisfying about a rom-com that knows how to cut deep and still make you laugh.
