When asked to elaborate, Lorde stated, “I felt like stopping taking my birth control; I had cut some sort of cord between myself and this regulated femininity,” she continued. “It sounds crazy, but I felt that, all of a sudden, I was off the map of femininity. And I totally believed that that allowed things to open up.”

As for the album itself, Lorde told BBC 1 radio that she felt “totally amazing” about its release. She also said that she felt really “open and excited” for people to hear it.” She also revealed that it was an album she thought she would never release because when she wrote it, she thought it was something she could never say aloud to the world.
