Earlier today, theCritics Choice Awards announced their nominationswithLa La Landleading the pack with 12 nominations. NowDamien Chazelle’s musical has gotten another boost by being named “Best Film” from the New York Film Critics Circle. NYFCC is one of the most influential critics groups, and I’d be shocked ifLa La Landdidn’t also pick up Best Film from the Los Angeles Film Critics (who announce their picks on December 4th) since the movie is a bit of a love letter to that city.

WhileLa La Landpicked up the top prize, it didn’t dominate, and there was some nice diversity in the other categories.Moonlightcontinues to pick up momentum by nabbing Best Director forBarry Jenkinsand Best Supporting Actor forMahershala Ali.Manchester by the Seaalso did well by picking up wins for Best Screenplay (Kenneth Lonergan) and Best Actor (Casey Affleck).Isabelle Huppertalso made some headway in the Best Actress race by being recognized for her work in bothElleandThings to Come.Michelle Williamswas also recognized for two films, earning Best Supporting Actress for bothManchester by the SeaandCertain Women.
