While everyone was distracted withJ.J. Abrams’Star Wars: The Force Awakens, he was busy producing a very secretive film by the name of10 Cloverfield Lane. Thefilm’s first trailerdebuted as a surprise earlier this month, as did its cast which includesJohn Goodman,John Gallagher Jr., andMary Elizabeth Winstead.And now it’s Winstead who’s opening up about the film and what audiences can expect to see when it opens March 11th.
Speaking toEWat the publication’s SAG Awards party, Winstead talked about the process of filming the movie in secret, away from the media attention that was focused onStar Wars, even though Abrams was involved as a producer. In fact, he described this new film as a “blood relative” to his 2008 productionCloverfield. But while Winstead and her co-stars clearly know what’s going on in the world outside the titular address, don’t expect any straight answers from her - this is an Abrams production, after all.

Here’s what Winstead had to say about the filming process of10 Cloverfield Lane:
“There is this veil of secrecy to it from the very beginning. We were making this movie in this little bubble where nobody else knew what we were doing and there’s really only three actors in the whole thing, so it kind of felt like this really intimate experience. Now that it’s about to come out, it’s sort of crazy — like, ‘Oh yeah, people are excited to see this movie.’ I forgot that that was going to happen.”
Audiences will get their chance to check out the film for themselves in a few short weeks, but it might be that long before people know what kind of story they’re really buying tickets for. Winstead teased a bit more about the plot:
“It’s so much about just the actors interacting with each other and that tension that builds, just all wondering if they are who they say the are, if they’re telling the truth or not, and really wondering what’s outside."
Since10 Cloverfield Laneis a “blood relative” toCloverfield,like Abrams said, I for one would be disappointed if there weren’t some sort of monstrous menace plaguing the world outside the home seen in the trailer. And I’d be willing to bet that Abrams' particular choice of words has something to do with the plot, but if Winstead knows (and she does), she’s not telling:
“We always have the script. We know where it’s all leading to. As production went on there were rewrites, as there usually are, but nothing that was major. It was always something that I knew we weren’t going to be able to talk about until people saw the movie.”
Since production of10 Cloverfield Lanecoincided with shooting ofStar Wars: The Force Awakens, you might think that the cast of the former film learned some secrets about the latter. You’d be wrong:
“Oh no, he keeps it on lockdown for sure. There are no secrets coming out of that guy.”
So don’t expect any new secrets about10 Cloverfield Laneto spill until its debut on March 11th.
