It’s going to be a summer full ofhorrorwith a great mixture of original and franchise terrors sending a chill down moviegoers' spines. On the franchise side of the aisle, Blumhouse and Atomic Monster are booting upM3GAN 2.0. The sequel to the critical and financial 2023 smash hit is just about a month from its killer debut andM3GANjust got a familiar, but violent, rating.
M3GAN 2.0has been rated PG-13 for “strong violent content, bloody images, some strong language, sexual material and brief drug references”.While that is the same teen-friendly rating as the first AI horror comedy, like M3GAN herself, it’s a bit of an upgrade. The originalM3GANwas rated PG-13 for “violent content and terror, some strong language and a suggestive reference.” That film also got an “Unrated Cut” on thephysical media release, so it’ll be interesting to see ifM3GAN 2.0will get the same blood-soaked treatment.
What’s ‘M3GAN 2.0’ About?
After M3GAN tries to kill her creator Gemma (Allison Williams) the first time around, she’s back to “protect” Cady (Violet McGraw). Gemma’s niece was M3GAN’s prime objective. That meant protecting her at all costs. Even if killing was involved. However, this time she’s playing the “hero”. In a move not too dissimilar toTerminator 2: Judgment Day, M3GAN istaking on arogue government AI robotnamed Amelia that was based on Gemma’s designs. Amelia won’t stop until everyoneconnected to her creation is dead. The first film was a fun, campy horror comedy with sharp, all-too-real, commentary about the state of AI in our everyday lives.M3GAN 2.0looks to be more of the same with an added action-adventure vibe. Besides the amazing overall quality of theM3GAN, the film was also a major moneymaker for Blumhouse and Universal. It made over $180 million worldwide on a small $12 million budget. In the two years sinceM3GANrelease, this AI Doll has become a horror queen and the genre’s most marketable new character.M3GANhas had a handful of apparel collections,action figuresandFunko Pops. That’s probably going to continue afterM3GAN 2.0finishes its promising theatrical run.
