Fixer UpperstarJoanna Gainesjust took on anextremely personal renovation projectin her solo series,Mini Reni.In a recent episode of the show, the HGTV celebrity renovated her parents’ outdoor patio that had remained underutilized for years. Gaines transformed the place into a multifunctional,temperature-controlled, glass-enclosed spacefor her parents,NanandJerry Stevens,to enjoy. While working on the project, Gaines expressed that the renovation was special for her because it allowed her to give back to her biggest supporters.

The reality starshared that she had always wanted to designsomething creative yet functionalfor her parents. While talking about the idea for the cozy space withPEOPLE, Gaines revealed that it came to her during a lunch with her dad at her Waco restaurant, Magnolia Table. The interior designersketched the concept out on a napkin,and her parents were immediately on board. TheMini Renistar revealed that her father’s only request was to create a space where he could tend to his plants, and his wife could also comfortably enjoy the outdoors.

Knowing her mom’s dislike of bugs, Gaines made sure that the transformed patio would be theperfect middle ground for her parentsto spend time together.The designer shared that it warms her heart to see her parents enjoying something she created just for them.

‘Mini Reni’ Is a Passion Project for Joanna Gaines

Joanna’s new series is a passion project for the designer. “Anytime I come off of a big renovation I find myself craving smaller projects,” she toldGood Housekeepingahead of the series debut. “WithMini Reni, this is where I can feel a bit more freedom to try new ideas and end with these fresh finished spaces that don’t require months of work. you may make a big impact when you’re open to getting a little creative and thinking outside the box.”

The series launched in early May, but the latest episode really touched Joanna’s heart. “I just love that I got to do something for my parents, and I made them film with me,” she shared with PEOPLE, revealing that her parents continue to show her how much the renovated space means to them. “Every night he’s texting me, showing me a picture of them in there, eating dinner,” she said. “I got to create the space where they’re together. But my dad feels like he can tend to everything that he loves, where he gets nurtured with plants.”
