DC’s first feature in “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters"is just around the corner.Superman, starringDavid Corenswet,Rachel Brosnahan,andNicholas Hoult, is set to hit theaters in just a month. DirectorJames Gunnrecently shared some creative insights about the film, revealing that an Oscar-winning movie served as a major influence, in terms of its visual effects and its storytelling themes.
In a recent interview, James Gunn revealed that he drew inspiration from the 2023 Japanese filmGodzilla Minus Onewhile working onSuperman. The DC Studios co-chair said the kaiju film’s visual effects influenced his approach to crafting the look of this new superhero adaptation, as well as its story, which he aimed to incorporate intoSupermanas well.
“I tried to fuse elements like giant monsters, robots, flying dogs, and other superheroes…
… My goal was to make a film like ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ which depicted Godzilla but also had great human drama. Superman and the flying dog (Krypto) also appear in this work, but there is an underlying human story. The relationship between Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor is at the core of the work.”
Supermanis a new DCU adaptation of the Man of Steel that’s set to come out in 2025. Whileit is not an origin story, it’s going to feature a younger version of this iconic superhero, as well asa side of him that not many people have seen. In addition, Superman is going to feature other characters in the DC franchise, such as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Michael Holt/Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Rex Mason / Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan).
‘Godzilla Minus One’ Is A VFX Masterpiece Made On A Small Budget
Godzilla Minus Oneis a Japanese kaiju film written and directed byTakashi Yamazaki. Set near the end of World War II, the story follows a disgraced Japanese pilot who returns to a bomb-ravaged Tokyo. Just as the nation begins to recover, Godzilla emerges, forcing a broken country to confront yet another devastating threat. Released in 2023, the film was highly praised by fans and critics alike, earning a Certified Fresh critics' score of 99% and a Verified audience score of 98% onRotten Tomatoes.
Beyondits powerful human storyand its tale of a country persevering at its lowest point,Godzilla Minus Onewas heavily praised for its visual effects. It even won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2024.Vulturereported that the film’s overall budget was just $10 to $15 million, which is a small sum compared to other blockbuster contenders. In an interview, Yamazaki revealed that the visual effects were handled entirely in-house, and in addition to directing, he also served as the film’s VFX supervisor, thus making the filmmaking process more streamlined.
