The Boyshas never been afraid of staying in line with the times. In fact, it’s kind of thePrime Video series’whole thing. Whether intentional or not, the show has mirrored many of the things actually happening in our world, and its upcoming fifth and final season will be no different. But, the last batch of episodes won’t onlypaint a clearer picture of how the fictional universe’s politics parallel our own, but, according to series creator,Eric Kripke, the primary antagonist and protagonist will also begin to blur together as one.
While chatting with TV Insider, Kripke was quick to point out the close comparisons between the leader of the titular anti-supe vigilante team, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), and his archnemesis, Homelander (Antony Starr). Setting up what’s to come in the fifth season, Kripke teased,

“[Homelander’s] story in the season was one of mortality and legacy. He’s getting older, so he wants to go back and face his childhood and try to put all that behind him. He wants to try to be this good father and create this legacy moving forward, and all that’s very intentional, and it’s also exactly what Butcher’s going through. And by design,we always love it when we can put Butcher and Homelander around the same emotional journeysand see how they react to them because they [have this] two sides of the same coin thing where they’re the epic hero and villain of the show. So anytime that we get an opportunity to mirror what they’re going through, we take it.”
Going Off the Rails on a Crazy Train
While Homelander has always been a sociopathic madman, Season 4 allowed him to go a hop, skip, and a jump further. By the end of the installment, he had carried out revenge on the lab technicians who tortured him as a child, and discovered that his father,Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, was still alive – not to mention he’s now essentially running the country. His arc in Season 5 will undoubtedly explore more of these themes of trauma and familyand see him go even further off the rails. Meanwhile, Butcher – who has been driven by anger and rage over the last four seasons – will either continue to go down the path he’s laid out for himself, or will be pulled back to humanity by Hughie (Jack Quaid), MM (Laz Alonso), or one of his other team members.
