Thesecond trailerfor directorNeil Marshall’sHellboywas a vast improvement on the first, working overtime to differentiate itself fromGuillermo del Toro’s take on the material by havingDavid Harbour’s horned hero say the fuck word, horrifically impaling a few people, and then makingDaniel Dae Kim’s Ben Daimio turn into a damn were-jaguar. It’s a whole lot to take in is what I’m saying, so if you wanted a less frantic look at Big Red and the Blood Queen (fantastic band name), these new images released today are just what the witch doctor ordered.

The images feature a new look forMilla Jovovich, going full Little Dead Riding Hood as the ancient sorceress Nimue. There’s also a bit of bonding over an absurdly large gun between Hellboy and magical B.P.R.D. team memberAlice Monaghan, played by up-and-comerSasha Lane. It continues to strike me as odd that on an aesthetic level, thisHellboymovie is…pretty much the same as del Toro’sHellboymovies. (Guillermoloveswooden forest crowns like the one on Jovovich’s head.) But Harbour is a delight,The Descentearned Neil Marshall benefit of the doubt for life, and, as previously mentioned, were-jaguars. I’m still on board for now.

Here is the official synopsis forHellboy:

Hellboy is back, and he’s on fire. From the pages of Mike Mignola’s seminal work, this action packed story sees the legendary half-demon superhero (David Harbour, “Stranger Things”) called to the English countryside to battle a trio of rampaging giants. There he discovers The Blood Queen, Nimue (Milla Jovovich,Resident Evilseries), a resurrected ancient sorceress thirsting to avenge a past betrayal. Suddenly caught in a clash between the supernatural and the human, Hellboy is now hell-bent on stopping Nimue without triggering the end of the world.
