Judgement Day is near for the hotly-debated, internet fury-spawningGhostbustersreboot, and Sony’s marketing team seems to have finally honed in on one of the film’s undeniable strengths – it’s absolutely gorgeous. FromBridesmaidsandSpydirectorPaulFeig, the film starsMelissa McCarthyas Abby,Kristen Wiigas Erin,Leslie Jonesas Patty, andKate McKinnonas Holtzmann, a team of women attempting to oust an infestation of ghosts in New York City that starts getting wildly out of hand when those ghost begin possessing human bodies.
Bizzare sexism and fandom rage aside, I think we can all agree that the first trailer was a misfire with a flat tone and strange lifelessness, but since then every new look has only restored my faith in Feig’s vision for the new world of Ghostbustin'. His comedy stylings have never translated all that well to trailers, but what is definitely translating is the stunning, colorful world-building he’s done for the titular ghosts and ghouls plaguing the city. With the help of the outstanding cinematographerRobert D. Yeoman, Feig has set a vibrant, striking landscape of hauntings and possessions that is entirely his own spin on the material, and it’s got me crossing my fingers harder than ever that this movie pulls the rest off.
