In a week of less-than-stellar competition from new debuts, Disney’s animated adventureÂMoanaeasily stayed atop the heap at the Friday box office; it could top out around $30 million for the weekend. The closest competitor was Warner Bros.' magical movieÂFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which still came in almost $1.5 million short of the top spot. Every film in the Top 10 was in at least its second weekend frame, including the World War II-era thrillerAlliedin third place, except for the lone wide-release debutIncarnate. The horror/thriller from directorÂBrad Peytonand starringÂCarice van Houten,Aaron Eckhart, andÂDavid MazouzÂcouldn’t crack a million dollars on Friday, and is aiming for a $2.1 million total this weekend.ÂElsewhere in the Top 10, the original sci-fi storyÂArrivalcrested overthe $100 million markworldwide; this Friday’s fourth spot will help to bolster the film’s ongoing box office success.ÂAlliedÂandÂArrivalare looking at a $7 million weekend, but it remains to be seen which film will end up ahead of the other.Outside of the Top 10 are two debuts of note: First, with $168,900, isÂBelieve, writer-directorBilly Dickson’s Christmas drama starringÂRyan O’Quinn,Shawnee Smith, andÂDanielle Nicolet; the film is headed for a $1 million weekend. But the best story among newcomers isJackie, the Oscar-hopeful starringNatalie Portmanas First LadyJacqueline Kennedy. The Fox Searchlight film debuted with an estimated$90,742on Friday, with an eye on a $275,000 opening from just five theaters. The $55,000 per theater average is better than anticipated.
