Usually the Critics’ Choice Awards are a respite from the dire nomination lists that the Emmy Awards provide. But this year, the Emmys did such a surprisingly good job of picking deserving people and projects that the 22nd Critics’ Choice nominations feel more like an afterthought than usual. There are a few surprises, though. Despite the fact that HBO again nabbed the top number of nominations again (22), Netflix and ABC shook things up by being tied for second with 14 each (FX, a perineal favorite, came in third with 12).

This year’s awards are also tinged with controversy. After The Broadcast Television Journalists Association decided to give People Magazine and and Entertainment Weekly exclusive access to its nominations, 15% of the membership resigned in protest. So the nominees this year have been selected by a much smaller pool than in the past.

Some noteworthy additions to the list this year though include Amazon’sFleabagfor Best Comedy Series andThandie NewtonforWestworld, but there are also some puzzling choices (Son of Zornfor Best Animated Series? The only actors nominated forRootsare white?) And whileRectifycontinues to be woefully overlooked, at leastOutlandergot a fair shake here. Also, look atStranger Thingsmaking a play for Best Drama!

The Critics Choice Awards will air live on A&E December 11th at 8 p.m. ET, and will be hosted byT.J. Miller. Check out the full list of nominees below:
