The evolution of online stars into mainstream notoriety is nothing new in 2025, with the likes ofBo BurnhamandAddison Raemaking the switch in recent years. Another name that can now be added to this ever-growing list isBenito Skinner’s, perhaps better known online by his stage name “Benny Drama," who has recently made a big streaming splash with his comedy-routine-turned-TV-show,Overcompensating, a series co-executive produced by musical sensationCharli XCX.
After premiering on August 09, 2025, on Prime Video, the series has gained plenty of attention thanks to positive word-of-mouth from strong critical and audience reception. Because of this, as of May 20, just five days after its debut,Overcompensatinghas officially landed at the #1 spot inPrime’s most-watched TV shows in the U.S., even finishing second in both movies and TV, withPaul Feig’s long-awaited sequel,Another Simple Favor, taking top spot. This all comes followingOvercompensating’s huge debut on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the raucous coming-of-age comedy earning amighty 95% score from criticsand an 80% rating from audiences thus far, with such scores subject to change. An official synopsis forOvercompensatingreads:
“Follow Benn, a closeted former football player, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen, a high school outsider; with guidance from his older sister and her boyfriend, Benny and Carmen juggle horrible hookups, flavored vodka and fake IDs.”
‘Overcompensating’ Is Hilarious and Honest
There is plenty to like about the mainstream debut of Benny Drama. Not only isOvercompensatinga neatly constructed tale that captures the cringe-inducing angst of modern teenage existence, warts and all, but it also boasts an eye-catching cast of promising young performers, including the likes ofAdam DiMarco,Mary Beth Barone,Rish Shah,Julia Shiplett,Tommy Do,Connie Britton,andKyle MacLachlan.InEmma Kiely’s review of the show for Collider, she awarded it an impressive 8/10, citing remarkable chemistry between the leads, standout hilarious performances, and intriguing central theming as factors. “Overcompensatingis a hilarious, warm, and honest show from one of comedy’s most exciting voices,” Kiely wrote, adding, “It never lets its outrageous humor and satire detract from its dramatic themes, and with a cast full of skilled comedic actors,Benito Skinner’s long-form debut is the must-see comedy show of the summer.”
