WhileCaptain America: Civil Warhas already amassed $291.2 million at the international box office, the highly anticipated Marvel film finally launched its domestic debut last night with Thursday “preview” screenings, and things are off to a strong start. The film scored $25 million, which puts it just behindAvengers: Age of Ultronwhich nabbed $27.6 million during its Thursday night preview screenings, but well aboveThe Avengers’ $18.7 million andIron Man 3’s $15.6 million.
But while the film has only been in theaters for a matter of hours, it’s already scored one box office record. With $3.1 million in Thursday previews, that marks Marvel’s best performance yet for IMAX previews, bestingAge of Ultron’s $3 million. While the film doesn’t officially open until today, Thursday evening showings have now become the norm post-The Dark Knight Risesshooting, as theaters now start those “midnight screenings” much earlier in the day.
