While Marvel Studios took last year off from Comic-Con, theycame roaring back this yearwith a bevy of announcements and exclusive footage. The final announcement of the night was one we kind of already knew, but it’s exciting nonetheless:Brie Larsonis Captain Marvel. Indeed, the Oscar-winningRoomactress will be starring in Marvel Studios’ first female-led superhero movie,Captain Marvel. We caught wind of the fact that Larsonwas the frontrunner for the role last month, and she seems an excellent choice to become the latest member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers, a U.S. Air Force pilot who gets superhero abilities. Marvel Studios first put this project on its slate a few years ago, settingInside Outco-writerMeg LeFauveandGuardians of the Galaxyco-writeNicole Perlmanto pen the script. The project doesn’t yet have a director, but it was important that Marvel cast the lead character soon as she’s expected to play a role in the upcoming two-part epicAvengers: Infinity War.
TheAvengerspicture starts filming this December withCaptain America: Civil WardirectorsJoeandAnthony Russoat the helm, and while it hasn’t beenconfirmedthat Captain Marvel is in the movie, given that it’s a universe-inclusive event, it’s safe to assume she has at least a cameo in the picture.
Larson won the Academy Award for Best Actress earlier this year for her tremendous performance in the indie dramaRoom. She’s been doing excellent work for years, ranging from indies likeShort Term 12andThe Spectacular Nowto studio pictures likeScott Pilgrim vs. The World. Most recently she shot a co-starring role in the upcoming blockbusterKong: Skull Island, and she’s currently filming another indie drama calledThe Glass Castlethat reunites her with herShort Term 12directorDestin Daniel Cretton.
Clearly Larson has no interest in sticking to one particular kind of film, butCaptain Marvelmarks her biggest project yet, and it’ll be exciting to see how she fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now,to find a director…
