Back in Novemberwereportedthat aBreaking Badmovie was in the works and that it might followAaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman. NowTHRconfirms that the film is a sequel following Jesse and that the film will air first on Netflix before running on AMC, the network that originally carriedBreaking Bad.
Per THR, the film “will follow the escape of a kidnapped man (Paul’s Jesse) and his quest for freedom.”Breaking BadcreatorVince Gilliganwill direct and executive produce the film alongside franchise collaboratorsMark JohnsonandMelissa Bernstein.
On the one hand, you would think that withBreaking Bad, it would be good to leave well enough alone, but Gilligan and his writers have proved themselves with the critically acclaimed spinoffBetter Call Saul, and a movie sounds like a better way to continueBreaking Badthan a series. With a series, you have to find a way to keep going and stretch out the story, but in a feature-length film, there’s a way to provide some finality while also doing something different than what you did with the show.
It’s also cool that their flipping the distribution script a bit. Netflix really helped spur the growth ofBreaking Bad’s audience, so it’s only fitting that they should get the feature-length film, but it’s cool that AMC will also get to air the movie so thatBreaking Badcomes home in a way.
As for whether or notBryan Cranstonwill return, he confirmed a movie was in the works, but doesn’t know if there’s a role for his Walter White:
“It’s a great story and there are a lot of people who felt that they wanted to see some kind of completion to some of these storylines that were left open [in the series finale],” Cranston said. “This idea, from what I’m told, gets into those — at least a couple of the character show were not completed, as far as their journey.”
“I don’t know if there’s an appearance — flashbacks, flash forwards — but I’m excited about it because it’s Breaking Bad and it was the greatest professional period of my life and I can’t wait to see all those people again, even if I just come by to visit.”
Paul is keeping busy. In addition to reprising his role as Jesse, he’s also landed roles on the third season ofWestworldand Apple’s upcoming showAre You Sleeping. There’s no word yet on when theBreaking Badmovie would start shooting, but it sounds like the project is coming together quickly.
