If you live in America, you almost certainly spent a portion of the weekend either seeingCaptain America: Civil Waror reading or talking about the latest Marvel property, the third film in theCaptain Americaseries. That fact is reflected in the numbers, as it’s now being reported thatCivil Warcame in with a projected $181.8 million at the domestic box office, following a spectacular bow overseas to some $202 million last weekend. That would make the film, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the fifth highest opening in the history of the industry, and the fourth Marvel title to enter the top ten best domestic opening weekends of all time.
This isn’t exactly a surprise, but that’s no reason to diminish what Marvel, the Russos, and their fantastic cast and crew have accomplished here. Bundled with two weeks at the international box office,Captain America: Civil Warhas come in with a global take of a little over $678 million, which is just straight bonkers. In fact, the international box office for the film, which starsChris Evansas the titular First Avenger andRobert Downey Jr.as Iron Man, is now looking to have a cumulative take of an estimated $497 million all tolled.

Meanwhile, Disney did some more solid numbers withThe Jungle Bookcoming in with $21.9 million to take second place in its fourth weekend at the box office, while Open Road’sMother’s Daycame in at a distant $9 million in its second weekend. The Huntsman: Winter’s Warearned the fourth spot with $3.6 million, andKey & PeelecomedyKeanu, starring the titular adorable cat, came in fifth with $3.1 million. Interestingly,Mother’s Dayraised from it’s opening weekend take, whileKeanutook a 67% loss in its second frame. Still, the story here is the continued reign of Marvel Studios and the Marvel brand, which will have another hit to boast about in a few weeks when 20th Century Fox’sX-Men: Apocalypsehits the big screen. Until then, expect Cap to dominate every weekend until the end of May.
