WithBallarddominating the Prime Video charts since its July 9 debut, fans ofMichael Connelly’scrime universehave one burning question: will there be a Season 2? While the official word from Amazon is still pending, series starMaggie Qhas just given us the most encouraging update yet — and it sounds like wheels are already turning behind the scenes. In a new interview, Q confirmed that a writers’ room is already working on scripts for Season 2 and revealed a potential production window that should have fans feeling hopeful. “There are a couple indies that I’m really excited about, and they’re looking for financing,” she told The Hollywood Reporter, before adding: “If we get a season two ofBallard, I think we’ll be back in the fall to shoot.”
That means production could begin as early asfall 2025, less than a year after Season 1 premiered — a rare quick turnaround in the current TV landscape. Despite her cautious optimism about the show’s renewal, Q made it clear that the creative team isn’t sitting still. “We have a writers room, and they’ve been writing away,” she said. “The arc for the second season is very exciting.”

Still, she isn’t ready to pop champagne just yet. “But I’ve had writers rooms hired before and then gotten canceled. So everyone’s like, ‘Maggie, of course!’ I’m like, ‘No, no, no.’ There is no ‘of course.’”
It’s a fair point. Even thoughBallardis based on a popular book series and comes from the same universe asBoschandBosch: Legacy, both of those shows were ended despite loyal fanbases and strong viewership. As Q put it: “This industry is not what it was before. It’s barely recognizable to me, and shows are so expendable.”

Why Season 2 of ‘Ballard’ Is Necessary?
While no plot details for Season 2 have been revealed, the first season was inspired in part by Connelly’s 2022 novelDesert Star, and ended with major cliffhangers and unresolved arcs — including the fate of Ballard’s Cold Case unit and her dynamic with Harry Bosch (TitusWelliver), who appeared in several pivotal episodes.
In our exclusive red carpet interview,Q told Collider’sAidan Kelley: “Michael Connelly and the producers alike, we all agreed when we sat down before I even took this that if we weren’t doing something different, then what are we doing?” That mission to carve out a distinct identity forBallardis clearly paying off — not just in audience engagement, but in the confidence of the creative team to push forward.
