A big star is circling the even-bigger title role ofTim Burton’s next project.Margot Robbieis in early talks to star inAttack of the Fifty-Foot Woman, a remake of the 1958 drive-in cult classic of the same name. It would be the first collaboration between theBeetlejuice Beetlejuicedirector and theWolf of Wall Streetstar.Variety reportsthat Robbie is looking to produce the project, as well as star in it.
The actor is no stranger to genre material, and even has some experience being “larger than life”: the allegorical opening scene ofBarbiefeatures Robbie as a version of the title doll colossal enough to block out the sun. After her star turn in that billion-dollar blockbuster, Robbie is next set to appear withColin Farrellin the romantic fantasyA Big Bold Beautiful Journeythis fall, and then inEmerald Fennell’s adaptation ofWuthering Heightsnext year. If Robbie does become the film’s lead, the producers will now turn to looking for a new screenwriter:Gone Girl’sGillian Flynnpenned the first draft of theAttack of the Fifty-Foot Womanremake’s script, but she has reportedly departed the project over scheduling conflicts.

Directed by b-movie veteranNathan Juran(The Deadly Mantis,The 7th Voyage of Sinbad) and written byMark Hanna(Not of This Earth),Attack of the Fifty-Foot Womantakes place in a small California desert town, where heiress Nancy Archer (Allison Hayes,The Steel Jungle) is dealing with a philandering husband (William Hudson,The Amazing Colossal Man), his mistress (Yvette Vickers,Hud), and her own alcoholism. Those problems start to seem very small when she’s run off the road by an alien spacecraft, exposing her to bizarre alien rays. Over the next several days, Nancy gets progressively larger until she’s the titular fifty-foot woman. She promptly rampages through town, looking to get revenge on those who’ve wronged her. Made for a miniscule budget, the movie became a cult favorite over the years. It was remade for HBO with a satirical, feminist bent in 1993; it was directed byChristopher Guestand starredDaryl Hannahas the title character.
