The first images from the highly-anticipatedDoctor Odysseyand9-1-1crossover are officially out! The special episode will feature 9-1-1 starAngela Bassettas LAPD sergeantAthena Grantteaming up with Dr. Max Bankman(Joshua Jackson)fromDoctor Odyssey.The LAPD officer boards the Odyssey during Casino Week and starts investigating two suspicious passengers who might betargeting the ship’s vault.The first-look photos from the upcoming episode give the fans a glimpse of all the high-stakes action.
Many of the photos feature Athena and Dr. Max sitting down for what looks likea tense game of poker. While the exact details of the episode remain under wraps, many of the photos show Athena interacting with Captain Robert Massey (Don Johnson) in full uniform, which goes to show that she isnot on board for a vacation. The crossover event promises to bring together the action-packed world of9-1-1’s emergency response with the high-seas medical drama ofDoctor Odyssey.
The episode will also feature appearances byPhillipa Soo, Adrianne Palicki, Liam Johnson, andMarcus Emanuel Mitchell, with several imageshinting at a late-night emergencyunfolding on deck. The trailer for the episode opens with Captain Max telling Athena that the ship’s vault contains more money than it ever has before, as he asks for her help. In the last few seconds of the trailer,Athena discovers a bomb on the ship,and chaos ensues soon after.
In an interview with TV Line, The9-1-1star confessed that she didn’t think Athena would want to get back on a boat after hertraumatic experience with a hijacked and bombed vesselin a previous9-1-1storyline. The Emmy-winning actress admitted that she pushed back against the idea because she thought itwent against her character’s personality.
However, she admitted that when “Duty calls, she has to go,”even if she doesn’t want to. According to Bassett, the producers initially wanted both Athena and her husband Bobby, played byPeter Krauseto board the Odyssey together. During the9-1-1Season 7 premiere, the couple’s belated wedding cruise turns into a fight for survival after terrorists hijack the ship. Bassett believed thatputting both of them back on a boatnot long after the ordeal wasn’t realistic.
Eventually,the producers came to her with a revised storylinewhere only Athena would board the ship. Bassett admitted that despite her character’s hesitation and past trauma, the plot of the crossover was too good to pass up. The actress shared that she had such a good time filming on the Odyssey, that she’d love for more of Athena’s9-1-1friends to enjoy the experience for themselves. According to her,Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) would be the perfect fitif another crossover was to happen between the two shows.
The9-1-1andDoctor Odysseycrossover event will air on August 22, 2025.
