As the days continue to pass since itscontroversial Season 2 finale, it seems increasingly likely that thelackluster Disney eraofDoctor Whois going to end with a whimper.Russell T. Davies' second era at the helm has found itself in the middle of a storm of speculative rumors, as thefuture of the timey-wimey seriesremains in doubt. However, the latest news from the BBC instead points to the likelihood thatDoctor Who’s “Whoniverse” will continue to expand at pace, althoughDisney are likely to get booted out of the TARDIS for good.

In a statement made by the BBC, it has been announced that anew animated series ofDoctor Whoadventures will be heading to the British children’s network Cbeebies. The series “will see theDoctor travelling through time and spacefor the pre-school audience, solving mysteries and problems alongside their companions and other friends,” the BBC announced, although it was also confirmed in the same statement that the series is on the lookout for “a passionate production company to create and produce the series,” with Disney not involved; Perhaps this is an indicator of things to come for the main show. In the statement,Patricia Hidalgo, Director of Children’s and Education, said:

“Everyone is welcome at CBeebies, including the Doctor! This much-loved franchise entertains millions around the world, so it is only right that our younger audience get to experience the wonder and the magic of the Doctor in a brand new format. This is an extremely exciting opportunity, and we are looking forward to welcoming companies to pitch for this new project, as we continue our commitment and investment in the UK’s animation industry.”

Another ‘Doctor Who’ Spin-Off is Also On the Way

The suggestion thatDoctor Whomight get cancelled is all but futile now, with the animated spin-off series joining another upcoming branch to the timey-wimey tree, namelyThe War Between the Land and the Sea. Led by frequent Davies collaboratorRussell Toveyas Barclay, and also including the likes ofJemma Redgrave, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Ruth Madeley, Colin McFarlane,andAlexander Devrient,The War Between the Land and Seapromises a “Doctor-lite” spin-off that will bring action and drama to the UNIT premises. The synopsis reads, “When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT step into action as the land and sea wage war.” No release date has yet been announced.
