90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 DaysVeah Nethertonargues that exes can be friends, but as I see more of her storyline unfold, I beg to differ.Veah first appeared on the franchise with a major secret: her ex-boyfriend Rory was accompanying her. Her boyfriend,90 Day FiancéstarSunny Mahdi, was aware of her friendship with Rory but not that he was going to South Africa too.
Sunny was already extremely jealous over their connection and thought their relationship was inappropriate.Veah claimed all along their relationship is platonic and Rory is only a good friend with her best interests at heart. The three of them are working on finding a middle ground that works for them all, but I’m not convinced by Veah’s argument.

‘Before the 90 Days’ Rory is Overly Defensive and Protective of Veah
This point is a double-edged sword. Everyone wants to be surrounded by caring and loving people. I most certainly want my inner circle full of people who support and protect me.However, history plays an important role here and if there used to be intimacy, then a person’s motives can be questioned. This is thecase with Rory and Veah. While it’s obvious Veah and Rory still care about each other, Sunny and fans are left wondering to what extent. When the three of them went to play pool together, Rory came across as defensive, evasive, and seemed to want to agitate Sunny.
This ‘Before the 90 Days’ Star Isn’t My Favorite, but at Least He’s Embracing His Partner’s Culture
Learning your partner’s culture goes a long way.
Again, while it’s admirable to care and defend someone’s honor, Rory’s actions are clearly causing problems for the new couple. This was also his first time meeting Sunny,so I would’ve expected Rory to make a better impression than he did.If Rory genuinely cared for Veah and her happiness, then I would think he would take a step back and offer support in a more passive way. Instead, he was pushy and seemed more like he was trying to prove that he was the bigger man of the two, even if Veah chose Sunny instead.
‘90 Day Fiancé’s Rory “Pokes the Bear”
The other issue is Rory’s blatantdisregard for the Muslim90 Day Fiancéstarand how he intentionally antagonizes him, which was also evident during the pool scene. As Sunny grew more agitated about Rory’s presence, Veah’s ex only riled him up more.Rory called Sunny “ignorant,” told him he “didn’t care” if Sunny was uncomfortable and overall claimed that he wasn’t the issue, but Sunny was.Part of me understands Rory’s defensive nature, especially since Sunny can be the aggressor. But at the same time, in my opinion, if Rory was a true friend with Veah’s best interests at heart, then he wouldn’t contribute to more turmoil.
This didn’t only occur on the show with the pool scene, but off-screen as well. At the Tell All,Shaun Robinsonrevealed that Rory left some comments on Sunny’s Instagram page.Rory admitted to “haha-ing” some of his pictures, which he did to “poke the bear essentially.”The entire cast was blown away by this confession. EvenBrian Munizthought his actions were inappropriate, and he’s received a lot of scrutiny this season as well. Purposely antagonizing someone raises a lot of red flags and questions.

Overall, from my perspective, it seems like Rory is trying to destroy the relationship. I’m not sure if he’s doing this because he still loves Veah and doesn’t want her with someone else, or if he just doesn’t want her to be happy. Either way though, I understand the international90 Day Fiancéstar’s point of viewand not having Rory in their lives would solve a lot of issues all around.Even if I’m totally wrong, his actions are disturbing their peace, which is far more important than maintaining a friendship. In the end, cutting ties with Rory would help Sunny feel more comfortable, which would lead to fewer arguments and both of them feeling more secure within their dynamic.90 Day Fiancéand its spin-off series air onTLC, and are available to stream on Max in the U.S.
