Disney Channel’s ‘Freaky Friday’ Is Honestly an Underrated Gem
TheDisney Channel Original Movie(DCOM) was once a beloved tradition that even rivaled the company’s theatrical releases. FromJohnny TsunamiandMotorcrosstothe massively successfulHigh School Musicalfranchise, the Mouse House’s cable network created an incredible Rolodex of event films. By 2018, however, DCOMs didn’t exactly have the same amount of prestige that they once did. Unfortunately forFreaky Friday, it seemed to come out at the wrong time. According toShowbuzz Daily, the film ranked among the channel’s lowest movie debuts. However, the film itself absolutely had all the makings of a classic.
22 Years Later, Lindsay Lohan’s Cult Classic Is Dominating Streaming Charts Again
The sequel hit theaters this August.
FeaturingCozi Zuehlsdorffas Ellie Blake andHeidi Blickenstaffas Katherine Blake, the movie is completely unique. Sure, we get the samemother/daughter body swapfrom previous versions, but this take is far more magical and camp. Ellie and Katherine’s swap occurs via a mysterious hourglass that belonged to Ellie’s late father. A rather faithfuladaptation of the stage musical, the story is more whimsical and gives into its more brazen side with a great deal of glee. Not only does it make the romp feel completely unique, even though it’s based on a story that is roughly four decades old, but it also allows the film to elevate the genre and enjoy it for all its brash glory. What’s more, the music is absolutely wonderful! Sure, the 2003 film has a number of fantastic bops, such as Anna’s (Lindsay Lohan) “Ultimate You”; the more theatrical score allows the movie to feel more like a classic DCOM. Interestingly, it even manages to craft something special thanks to the cast.
‘Freaky Friday’ Has a Fascinating Amount of Nuance
Freaky Fridayis not onlyan underrated Disney Channel property, but it’s also one filled with nuances. A credit to its stars,Zuehlsdorff and Blickenstaff approach the movie with a sensibility that is essential to making the story and themes ofFreaky Fridaywork. Blickenstaff, who hadpreviously played the role of Katherine on stage, is absolutely brilliant in the role of Katherine. She employs high-end comedy to perfection while balancing a beautiful approach to her characters. Despite the script often requiring her to take on over-the-top personas, she truly brings her parts to life. Likewise, Zuehlsdorff is an absolute master. She effortlessly switches between Ellie and Katherinewith an approach that is astounding. Ellie issoangsty that when the switch to uptight Katherine happens, it’s almost jarring and, in the case of a story such as this, integral to both the storytelling and comedy. Coupled with her incredible vocal performance, shetruly feels like a superstar.
While it may not have reached the same height as that of the 2003 classic,Disney Channel’s musical remake ofFreaky Fridayis truly an underrated gem. The incredible music allowsthe story to indulge in its campy side, while also returning to the tradition of DCOM musicals. Its story is unique enough to allow the remake its own identity and its stars are absolutely fantastic!
