Thehorrorcomedy sub-genre has really come into its own in the last half decade with films likeReady or NotandThe Monkeyshowing fans the funny side of death. However, one of the critically-acclaimed genre films that didn’t do so hot at the box office wasAbigail. The 2024 vampire ramp will be a year old come April. Now, the star-studded bloodbath from directorsTyler GillettandMatt Bettinelli-Olpin(Radio Silence) isfinally coming to4K.
All thanks to the German distributorTurbine Media,Abigailis dancing into the format with a 4K/Blu-ray combo pack. Both the slipcover and case feature two variations of the horror comedy’s poster. This would be our main vampire,Abigail in her ballet dresslooking up. The disc art will also have Abigail front and center with two gory pics of our lead from the film. The package itself has the same special features as theinitial American Blu-ray and DVD release. This includes multiple featurettes like “Hunters and the Hunted” and “How to Become a Ballerina Vampire”. This is a foreign release so the Blu-ray will be region locked. That being said, the 4K is region free.

Locked in a House With a Vampire
Loosely based on the 1936 classic Universal Monster sequelDracula’s Daughter,Abigailfollows a group of thieves hired to kidnap an important figure’s daughter. They then have to hold her for ransom for 24 hours in a locked-down location. These mysterious characters don’t know each other, and they’re not even allowed to use their real names. However, they kidnapped the wrong little girl as she turns out to be a vicious vampire. They reluctantly have to work together to survive the night or become this blood-sucking fiend’s next victim. Abigail didn’t make a bite-worthy mark at the box office, finishing with$42.7 million worldwideon a $28 million budget, but its critical response was glowing. The film currently holds a certified-fresh 83% onRotten Tomatoeswith an even better audience score of 84%.
Coming off two highly successfulScreamfilms, Radio Silence made another meaty horror comedy with a cast that was to die for. FeaturingMelissa Barrera(Scream),Kathryn Newton(Lisa Frankenstein),Kevin Durand(Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes),Dan Stevens(The Guest),Angus Cloud(Euphoria), andGiancarlo Esposito(MaXXXine), this was one of the best ensembles of 2024. NewcomerAlisha Weir, who played Abigail, put the film over the top with an intense and playful performance that’s sure to be a favorite of the horror community for years to come. If you like old-school campy horror gems likeThe House on Haunted Hilland the vintage vibe of the Universal Monsters,Abigailshould be on your genre watchlist.
