The 2020 Oscars telecast was a very mixed bag. On the one hand, thedominationofParasitein the Best Picture, Director, International Film, and Original Screenplays categories was a delight, and folks likeBong Joon-ho,Laura Dern, andJoaquin Phoenixgaveimpassioned, interesting speeches. On the other hand, you also had a completely random performance of “Lose Yourself” byEminem, a wholly unnecessary rapped recap midway through the show, and celebrities coming onstage to introduce a presenter to then introduce a winner....

Press junkets can be a slog. If you’re an actor, you sit in the same chair for six or seven hours and have to keep answering variations of the same question over and over again for different members of the press. And if you’re a member of the press, you step into a room and are given only a couple minutes to find interesting ways to discuss a specific film. It’s not an easy thing to do, and while Collider’s own Steve Weintraub certainlydid his bestwhen he interviewedRyan GoslingandHarrison FordforBlade Runner 2049, we’ll admit it was another interview with the pair that takes the cake....

Forget post-Covid. In thisSaturday Night Livesketch from Please Don’t Destroy, there is now a good variant that makes everything awesome. The Please Don’t Destroy group, made up ofBen Marshall,John Higgins, andMartin Herlihy,has produced some of the best sketches this season, all of which begin in some form in their writer’s office. In this sketch, Marshall announces there’s a new COVID variant, and the three lament about how frustrating Covid has been, hoping it will end soon....

Kristoffer Borgli, hot off the success ofDream Scenario, is set to re-team with A24 for his next project,The Drama. The film, still in the early stages, is already generating buzz withZendayaandRobert Pattinsonin discussions to star, according to a report byDeadline. Borgli willdirect the film from his own script, with production overseen byAri Aster, Lars Knudsen, andTyler Campelloneunder their Square Peg banner. The plot is currently under wraps, but it’s rumored to revolve around a romance that takes an unexpected twist just before a significant event....

The lack of female characters in toys is not a new problem. Merchandise companies have taken heat (and rightly so) for marginalizing or outright removing female characters from properties that are conservatively considered “boy-centric” even though it wasn’t just boys who powered Marvel andStar Warsto record-breaking successes at the box office. Last year, the campaign “#WheresGamora” cropped up afterGuardians of the Galaxymerchandise notably didn’t feature one of the five eponymous Guardians, presumably because she’s the only one who’s a woman....
