One of my favorite films of 2020 wasRegina King’s fantastic directorial debutOne Night in Miami. Based off the award-winning play of the same name byKemp Powers,the film imagines a fictional night in 1964 where Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree), Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.), and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge) discuss race, religion, and their personal responsibility to the civil rights movement. Loaded with some of the best performances you’ll see in a movie this year, I cannot recommend this film enough....

Creed 2plays like the dark, emotional reboot of 1985’s Rocky IV, a description that doesn’t quite do justice to just how well this film works. The sequel toCreed—with directorSteven Caple Jr.stepping in forRyan Coogler—sees Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) feeling the pressure of the light heavyweight championship around his shoulder, the same belt his father once defended. With his fiance Bianca’s (Tessa Thompson) star on the rise as well, Adonis' life is upended when the man who killed Apollo Creed, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren), arrives in Philadelphia to announce the latest challenger for the belt: His son, Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu)....

Riverdale’sRoberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who also write theAfterlife with Archiecomic, has been working on bringing aSabrina the Teenage Witchreboot to TV for awhile. At first the project landedwith The CW, and had the potential to be a spinoff ofRiverdale. But, the project was latersnatched by Netflixand given a 20-episode, two-season order, with Sacasa still at the helm. That move seems like it may open up the storytelling a lot more for the series, which is based on theChilling Adventures of Sabrinacomic (a title that the TV show now shares, according to Sacasa’s Twitter account (see below)....

Warner Bros. has released a bevy of new high-resolution images fromThe LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. The follow-up findsMike Mitchell(Trolls) stepping into the director’s chair, althoughPhil LordandChris Millerare still intimately involved as the film’s writers and producers. The project wasn’t without its difficulties, as it cycled through two other directors before landing on Mitchell, and a number of writers (includingBojack Horseman’sRaphael Bob-Waksberg) took a crack at the script. In the end, Lord and Miller are the sole credited screenwriters withMatthew Fogelreceiving a “story by” credit, and Mitchell brought this thing home as director....

There aren’t many filmmakers as closely associated with the rise of the independent cinema movement asRichard Linklater. The rumors are true!Robert Eggershas been hired todirect a sequel toLabyrinth, according toDeadline. The filmmaker is keeping himself busy after the recent launch of thenow-Oscar-nominatedNosferatu, Eggers' version of the classic vampire story. Plot details for the sequel remain under wraps, but the report does mention that this project would be a sequel toLabyrinth, instead of a remake. The screenplay for the next installment of the story is currently being written by Eggers alongsideSjón....
